Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- Munthir (مُنذِر): A warner; one who delivers a warning to alert people of a coming danger or consequence.
- Yakhshā (يَخْشَى): To fear with reverence and awe; a deep, heartfelt fear that leads one to take heed and act rightly.
- Hā (هَا): Refers to the Hour (the Day of Resurrection and Judgment).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, clarifying the true scope of his mission regarding the Hour. The disbelievers, out of mockery and denial, would repeatedly ask when the Hour would come, challenging the Prophet to produce its timing. Allah responds by affirming that knowledge of the Hour belongs exclusively to Him—it is not something the Prophet has been given. The Prophet’s role is not to know its timing, but to warn.
The verse states: "You are only a warner for those who fear it." This means the Prophet’s warning is most effective for those whose hearts are alive to the reality of the Hereafter—those who fear standing before their Lord and being held accountable for their deeds. Such people are the ones who will benefit from the warning, because their fear drives them to reflect, repent, and prepare. As for those who are heedless or arrogant, they turn away from the warning, and it does not penetrate their hearts.
The emphasis here is on the purpose of the Prophet’s mission: not to satisfy curiosity about the unseen timing of the Hour, but to awaken souls to the certainty of its coming. The warning is a mercy, a call to return to Allah before it is too late. And while the verse specifically mentions "those who fear," the warning itself is universal—it is delivered to all, but only the God-fearing will truly heed it. This is a praise of the believers who live with awareness of the Hereafter, and an encouragement for all to strive for such a state.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every one of us. The Hour is certain, but its timing is hidden from all creation—by divine wisdom, so that we may remain vigilant and prepared. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as a warner, and his warning reaches us today through the Qur’an and his Sunnah. The question is: are we among "those who fear it"?
Fear of the Hour is not a paralyzing dread; it is a beautiful, motivating awareness that pushes us to pray, to give charity, to be kind, to seek forgiveness, and to live with purpose. It is the fear that softens the heart, straightens the path, and fills the soul with hope in Allah’s mercy. Let this verse be a gentle reminder: the warning has been given, the door of repentance is still open, and the One who sent the warner is the Most Merciful, eager to forgive those who turn to Him. Do not wait for the Hour to arrive—prepare for it now, and let your fear of that Day be the very thing that brings you peace in this life and the next.
