Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wujūhun (وُجُوهٌ): Faces
  • Yawma-idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day (the Day of Judgment)
  • Musfirah (مُسْفِرَةٌ): Radiant, shining, bright, and illuminated

Explanation of the Verse:

On that tremendous Day—the Day of Judgment—there will be faces that are radiant and glowing with light. These are the faces of the blessed and the righteous, whose joy and happiness shine forth from their very features. Their faces will be bright, reflecting the inner peace and contentment that comes from having lived a life of faith and obedience to Allah.

This radiance is not merely a physical brightness, but a spiritual illumination that manifests on their countenances. It is the light of their good deeds, their sincere faith, and their devotion to their Lord. Their faces will be free from any trace of fear, sorrow, or regret, for they have earned the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise.

The brightness of these faces is a direct contrast to the dark, gloomy, and dust-covered faces of the wicked, which will be overshadowed by humiliation and despair. While the sinners will be overwhelmed by the weight of their transgressions, the believers will be graced with a light that reflects their inner purity and their steadfastness upon the path of truth.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the true success lies not in the fleeting pleasures of this world, but in the eternal happiness of the Hereafter. It calls upon every soul to reflect: what will my face look like on that Day? Will it be radiant with the light of faith, or darkened by the shadows of sin?

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the believers will be recognized on the Day of Judgment by the traces of their ablution (wuḍūʾ), which will shine brightly from their faces, hands, and feet. This is a beautiful encouragement for us to maintain our prayers and our purity, for these acts of worship leave a lasting mark that will illuminate our path on the Day when all else fades away.

So let us strive to be among those whose faces will be musfirah—radiant and shining—by filling our hearts with faith, our tongues with remembrance, and our lives with righteous deeds. For the joy of that Day is far greater than any happiness we can imagine in this world, and the light of that radiance is the ultimate reward for those who truly believed and did good.
