Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shan (شَأْنٌ): A matter, condition, or affair that occupies one's attention.
  • Yughneeh (يُغْنِيهِ): Makes him heedless of others; occupies him completely so that he has no concern for anything else.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day—the Day of Resurrection—every single person, whether righteous or sinful, will be consumed by their own overwhelming state. Each individual will be so absorbed in their personal predicament that they will have no capacity to care for anyone else, no matter how dear that person was to them in this worldly life. The terror and gravity of that moment will be so immense that a person will be entirely isolated in their concern, unable to think of their brother, their parents, their spouse, or their children. This is not out of selfishness or cruelty, but because the sheer magnitude of the situation leaves no room in the heart or mind for anything other than one's own fate. The Qur'an describes this in another verse: "Every man that Day will have enough to make him careless of others" (80:37). This is a profound reminder of the absolute seriousness of that Day, when all worldly bonds and attachments will be rendered meaningless in the face of individual accountability before Allah.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine a moment so intense that a mother forgets her nursing infant, a brother flees from his own brother, and a person would willingly sacrifice his closest kin to save himself from the punishment. This is the reality of the Day of Judgment—a day that is certain to come, yet many of us live as though it will never arrive. The Qur'an presents this vivid scene not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts while we still have time. Today, you have the opportunity to be concerned for others, to love for your brother what you love for yourself, and to build a relationship with Allah that will make that Day easier for you. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that on that Day, Allah will grant shade to seven categories of people, including those who love each other for His sake and those who remember Him in solitude with tearful eyes. So let this verse be a gentle yet firm call to prepare for that Day—through sincere repentance, good deeds, and a heart attached to its Creator. For whoever is occupied with Allah today will find that Allah is sufficient for them on the Day when every soul will be occupied with itself.
