Surah Al-Mutaffifin — Verse 26

Word Meanings:

• Khitāmuhu — Its seal, or its final taste and aftertaste.
• Misk — Musk, the most precious and beloved of fragrances.
• Falyatanāfas — Let them compete and strive eagerly, vying with one another.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the description of the delights prepared for the righteous in Paradise. After mentioning the pure, sealed wine from which the righteous drink — a wine whose vessel is securely sealed — Allah tells us that the very seal of that vessel is musk. Some scholars explain that this means the final taste and lingering aftertaste of that drink is like the finest musk, leaving a beautiful fragrance in the mouth. Others say the seal itself, the clay or wax covering the vessel, is made of pure musk — a sign of the utmost luxury and honor.

Then Allah says: "And for that let the competitors compete." This is a divine invitation and encouragement — if people are going to strive and race for anything in this life, let them race for this! Let them compete in good deeds, in obedience to Allah, in seeking His pleasure, and in longing for these eternal gardens. This is the true competition worth winning — not the fleeting race for worldly gains that vanish, but the race toward everlasting bliss that never ends.

The verse inspires the believer to look beyond the temporary pleasures of this world and fix their gaze on the eternal reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever." So the wise believer understands that true success lies in trading this fleeting life for the everlasting one. The competition here is not in wealth, status, or fame — but in faith, charity, prayer, kindness, and every act that draws one closer to Allah.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear brother, dear sister — what are you racing for today? Are you racing after promotions, bank balances, and social media likes that will all fade away? Or are you racing toward a garden whose very seal is musk, whose pleasures never end, and whose joy is the vision of your Lord? The Prophet ﷺ said: "The Fire is surrounded by desires, and Paradise is surrounded by hardships." So take the harder path now, and the sweetest reward will be yours forever. Compete with yourself, outdo yourself in goodness, and let your heart yearn for what Allah has prepared for His righteous servants. For in that — truly in that — let the competitors compete!
