Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Naqamū (نَقَمُوا): They found fault, resented, or took revenge against someone for a specific reason.
- Min-hum (مِنْهُمْ): From them — referring to the believing men and women who were thrown into the trench of fire.
- Illā an yu'minū (إِلَّا أَن يُؤْمِنُوا): Except that they believed — meaning their only "crime" in the eyes of the tyrants was their faith.
- Al-ʿAzīz (الْعَزِيزِ): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who cannot be overcome or defeated.
- Al-Ḥamīd (الْحَمِيدِ): The Praiseworthy, the One who is deserving of all praise in His words, actions, and attributes.
Explanation of the Verse:
The tyrants who dug the trench and lit the blazing fire did not punish the believers because of any crime, wrongdoing, or harm the believers had committed against them. There was no personal grievance, no theft, no betrayal, no insult — nothing that could justify such horrific cruelty. The sole reason for their persecution was that these believers had embraced the truth and declared their faith in Allah alone — the Almighty who is far too powerful for anyone to overcome, and the Praiseworthy who deserves all thanks and glorification for His perfect attributes and bountiful blessings.
This verse exposes the profound injustice of the oppressors: they could find no fault in the believers except their sincere devotion to their Lord. The believers' only "offense" was that they refused to bow to false gods and chose instead to worship the One true God — the Mighty, the Praiseworthy. This is the ultimate testimony to the purity of the believers' faith: their enemies had to dig deep to find any pretext for their cruelty, and all they could come up with was the believers' beautiful, sincere faith.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. These believers were not punished for spreading corruption, for harming others, or for any worldly transgression. They were tortured and burned alive simply because they said: "Our Lord is Allah." Their faith was so precious to them that they willingly faced the flames rather than renounce it. What does this tell us about the value of faith? It tells us that īmān (faith) is the most priceless treasure a person can possess — worth more than life itself.
And look at how Allah describes Himself in this very verse: Al-ʿAzīz — the Almighty who was fully capable of stopping the oppressors, yet allowed this trial to elevate the believers' ranks; and Al-Ḥamīd — the Praiseworthy, whose wisdom in every decree is perfect, even when we cannot fully comprehend it. The believers who were burned did not lose; they won the greatest victory — the pleasure of their Lord and eternal Paradise. And the oppressors, despite their apparent power, lost everything.
This verse invites you to ask yourself: What is your relationship with faith? Are you willing to stand firm for Allah even when the world opposes you? Remember that the believers in the trench faced fire and death, yet did not waver. Our trials today are far lighter — a harsh word, a mocking glance, a missed opportunity. Let their steadfastness inspire you to hold firmly to your faith, for Allah is with those who believe, and He will never abandon those who sacrifice for His sake. The fire of this world is temporary, but the bliss of Paradise is eternal — and it is precisely through such trials that Allah elevates His sincere servants to the highest ranks.
