Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ibil (الإِبِلِ): Camels, specifically referring to the well-known domesticated camels.
  • Yanzurūn (يَنظُرُونَ): They look — here it means looking with contemplation and reflection, not just a casual glance.
  • Kayfa khuliqat (كَيْفَ خُلِقَت): How they were created — pointing to the wondrous and precise design of their creation.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, addresses the disbelievers who deny His power to resurrect the dead and bring them back to life. He calls them to reflect upon His magnificent creation, beginning with the camel — a creature that stands as a living miracle of divine design.

The camel is a profound sign of Allah’s power and wisdom. Despite its enormous size and strength, it is gentle, obedient, and submissive to humans. It carries heavy burdens across vast deserts, endures extreme heat and thirst, and provides milk, meat, and wool. Its body is uniquely adapted to survive harsh conditions: its hump stores fat for energy, its long eyelashes protect against sand, and its padded feet allow it to walk effortlessly on scorching terrain. Yet, with all this, it remains docile and responsive to its master — a clear indication that it was created by a Wise and Powerful Creator who subjected it to humanity’s service.

Allah invites the disbelievers to look at the camel with eyes of contemplation, not mere sight. If they truly reflected, they would realize that such a perfect creation could not have come into existence by chance. The One who created the camel with this extraordinary design is certainly capable of resurrecting the dead. The same Power that brought forth this magnificent creature from nothing can easily bring life back to decayed bones.

This verse is a gentle yet powerful call to faith — a reminder that the universe around us is filled with signs pointing to the greatness of Allah. The camel, which the Arabs of that time knew intimately and relied upon daily, was chosen as the first example because it was familiar to them. By directing their attention to what they already knew, Allah made the proof accessible and undeniable.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look around you — every creature, every mountain, every star is a book of signs written by the Hand of the Almighty. The camel that once carried caravans across the Arabian deserts still stands today as a testament to Allah’s mercy and power. If you ponder deeply, you will find that the Creator who fashioned this animal with such precision and grace is worthy of your worship, your love, and your obedience. He did not create all of this in vain — He created it to draw you closer to Him. So open your heart, reflect on His signs, and let your soul find peace in the remembrance of its Lord. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in every living creature, there are signs for those who believe.
