- اعْمَلُوا (i'malū): Work, act, or do — a command to engage in deeds.
- فَسَيَرَى (fasayarā): Then He will see — indicating that Allah will observe and witness.
- الْمُؤْمِنُونَ (al-mu'minūn): The believers — the faithful followers of the Prophet ﷺ.
- عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ ('ālimi al-ghaybi wa al-shahādah): The Knower of the unseen and the witnessed — Allah, who knows all that is hidden and all that is apparent.
- فَيُنَبِّئُكُم (fayunabbi'akum): Then He will inform you — telling you the truth about your deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to those who lagged behind from jihad and to all people: "Work!" — meaning, act as you please, but know that your deeds are never hidden. Allah, His Messenger, and the believers will all see what you do. If you do good, it will be witnessed and acknowledged; if you do evil, it will be exposed and known. This is a powerful call to sincerity and accountability.
Allah then adds a profound reminder: "And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed" — the One from Whom nothing escapes, neither the secrets hidden in your hearts nor the actions you perform openly. On the Day of Judgment, He will inform you of everything you did in this worldly life, and He will reward or punish you accordingly.
This verse carries both a stern warning and a loving invitation. It warns those who persist in wrongdoing that their deeds are not concealed from Allah, His Messenger, or the believers — and that the ultimate reckoning is with Allah, Who misses nothing. At the same time, it invites everyone to turn back, to correct their course, and to fill their lives with righteous actions that will be witnessed with honor and rewarded generously.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine that every single action you take — every word you speak, every step you walk, every choice you make — is being seen by Allah, the Most High, and witnessed by His Messenger ﷺ and the believers. Does this not fill your heart with awe and motivate you to do what is right?
This verse is a beautiful call to action. It tells you that your life is not meaningless; it is a stage where your deeds are displayed before the Creator and His righteous servants. So seize this opportunity! Work for your Hereafter, purify your intentions, and strive in acts of obedience — prayer, charity, kindness, and seeking knowledge. For the One Who sees all will never let your good deeds go to waste. And on the Day you return to Him, He will greet you with His mercy and justice, informing you of all you have done and rewarding you with what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has imagined.
Let this verse be a turning point in your life. Let it inspire you to leave behind every sin, to embrace every good deed, and to live with the awareness that you are always in the presence of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing Lord. Indeed, success lies in working for His pleasure alone.
