Tafsir (Explanation):
Why do you hesitate, O believers, to fight a people who have shattered their solemn oaths and broken every covenant they made with you? These are the very ones who plotted and conspired to expel the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) from Makkah, gathering in the House of Consultation (Dar an-Nadwah) to devise their wicked scheme. And they are the ones who initiated aggression against you from the very beginning — they were the first to strike, aiding their allies against your allies, and they openly declared their intention to uproot you entirely when they marched forth to confront you at Badr.
So why do you hold back? Do you fear them? Do you dread their power, their numbers, or their might in battle? Let that fear be cast aside! For Allah — the Almighty, the All-Powerful — is far more deserving of your fear and reverence. If you are true believers, then your hearts should tremble before Allah alone, not before His creatures. When you truly fear Allah, you obey His commands, and His command here is clear: stand firm and fight those who have betrayed you, broken their promises, and sought to harm His Messenger.
This verse is a powerful call to courage and unwavering faith. It reminds us that the believer's heart is anchored in Allah, not in the threats of enemies. When you place your trust in Allah and fear Him above all else, no force on earth can intimidate you. The Qur'an awakens within us a spirit of honor, dignity, and steadfastness — urging us to defend our faith, our Prophet, and our community with bravery and conviction. Let this be a lesson for every generation: true faith transforms fear into strength, hesitation into resolve, and weakness into triumph. Allah is with those who believe, and He never abandons those who stand for His cause.
