Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Munkar (المنكر): Everything that is rejected by sound nature and Islamic law—disbelief, sin, and disobedience to Allah and His Messenger.
  • Al-Ma'ruf (المعروف): Everything that is recognized as good and virtuous—faith, obedience, and righteous deeds.
  • Yaqbidoon Aydeehum (يقبضون أيديهم): They withhold their hands—meaning they refrain from spending in the way of Allah and from doing good.
  • Nasoo Allah (نسوا الله): They forgot Allah by abandoning His commands and neglecting His remembrance.
  • Fanasiyahum (فنسيهم): Allah forgot them—meaning He abandoned them and deprived them of His mercy and guidance.
  • Al-Fasiqoon (الفاسقون): Those who have deviated from obedience to Allah and crossed the boundaries of faith.

The Interpretation:

In this profound verse, Allah exposes the true nature of the hypocrites—both men and women—revealing that they are all cut from the same cloth, united in their deceit and corruption. They are the exact opposite of the believers in every way. While the believers enjoin good and forbid evil, the hypocrites do the complete reverse: they command what is evil and forbid what is good. They call people toward disbelief and sin, while turning them away from faith and obedience.

Furthermore, they are miserly and tight-fisted, withholding their wealth from spending in the cause of Allah. They do not give charity, do not support the needy, and do not contribute to the strength of the Muslim community. Their hearts are closed to generosity, and their hands are clenched against goodness.

Then comes the most severe consequence: "They forgot Allah, so He forgot them." They neglected Allah's commands and abandoned His remembrance, and in return, Allah abandoned them from His mercy, guidance, and divine care. They are left to wander in the darkness of their own hypocrisy, deprived of the light of faith and the sweetness of obedience.

The verse concludes with a decisive declaration: "Indeed, the hypocrites—they are the truly rebellious sinners." They are not merely mistaken or weak; they are the complete embodiment of transgression, having fully deviated from the path of truth into the depths of falsehood and corruption.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear Muslim, this verse serves as a powerful mirror for self-examination. The hypocrites are not only those who lived in the time of the Prophet ﷺ—their characteristics can manifest in anyone who claims faith but acts against it. Let this verse be a wake-up call for us all: Are we calling toward good or toward evil? Are we generous in spending for Allah's cause or tight-fisted? Do we remember Allah constantly or have we forgotten Him in our busy lives?

The good news is that Allah's door of repentance is always open. If you find any of these traits in yourself, hasten to correct them. Replace commanding evil with enjoining good, replace miserliness with generosity, and replace forgetfulness of Allah with constant remembrance. For whoever turns back to Allah sincerely, Allah will turn to them with even greater mercy and love. The hypocrites chose the path of ruin, but you have the choice to be among the believers who are promised Paradise and eternal success. Choose wisely, for your choice today determines your eternity tomorrow.

📜 Verse 65-69 — At-Tawbah

And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals.
The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.
Allah has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally. It is sufficient for them. And Allah has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.
[You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged. [It is] those whose deeds have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.
