Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ithinba'atha" (إِذِ انبَعَثَ): When he sprang up or rushed forth with haste and determination.
- "Ashqaha" (أَشْقَاهَا): The most wretched and miserable among them—the one who surpassed all others in wickedness and evil.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse takes us back to the dramatic moment when the tribe of Thamud, in their arrogance and defiance, decided to challenge the truth brought by their Prophet Salih (peace be upon him). They had been given a miraculous sign—a she-camel that emerged from the rock as proof of Salih's prophethood. Yet, instead of reflecting on this divine wonder, they chose the path of transgression.
The verse tells us that the most wretched individual among them—the one who had sunk deepest into evil and rebellion—sprang up eagerly to commit the heinous act of slaughtering the she-camel. He was not forced; he volunteered with zeal, driven by his hardened heart and his desire to prove that he could defy the warnings of Allah. His name is recorded in history as a symbol of utter misery and ruin, for he used his free will to choose destruction over guidance.
This moment was not merely an act of cruelty toward an animal; it was a direct challenge to the Creator. The she-camel was a sign from Allah, and harming her was tantamount to rejecting His authority. The people of Thamud had been warned that if they touched her, a terrible punishment would befall them. Yet, the most wretched among them took the lead, and the rest either supported him or remained silent—making them all complicit in the crime.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this story. How often do we allow the "most wretched" impulses within us—our pride, our arrogance, our desire to defy what is right—to spring up and lead us toward ruin? The lesson here is profound: one person's evil can bring destruction upon an entire community if the others do not stand against it.
But there is also hope in this story. Allah, in His infinite mercy, always sends warnings before punishment. He gave Thamud every chance to repent, just as He gives us every chance to turn back to Him today. The Qur'an is filled with such reminders so that we may learn from the past and choose the path of righteousness.
Let us not be like the one who springs up eagerly to do evil. Instead, let us spring up eagerly to do good—to pray, to help others, to seek knowledge, and to draw closer to Allah. For the most blessed among us are those who race toward righteousness, not those who race toward destruction. May Allah protect us from the fate of Thamud and guide us to be among His righteous servants.
