Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ar-rizq" (الرزق): The sustenance and provisions that Allah provides, including crops, livestock, and other blessings.
- "Haraman wa halalan" (حرامًا وحلالًا): Declaring some of it forbidden and some permissible based on personal whims.
- "Tahtaroon" (تفترون): Fabricating lies and attributing false statements to Allah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to those who reject the truth and follow their own desires: "Have you considered the sustenance that Allah has sent down for you—from the crops of the earth, the milk of livestock, and the countless blessings He has provided? Yet you have taken it upon yourselves to declare some of it forbidden and some permissible, without any divine authority."
Then ask them directly: "Did Allah grant you permission to make such distinctions, or are you inventing lies against Him?" This question exposes the contradiction in their behavior—they claim to believe in Allah as the Creator and Provider, yet they legislate rules about His provisions without His command. If they have no revelation or proof, then their actions are nothing but sheer fabrication and falsehood against Allah.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that legislation—what is halal and what is haram—belongs exclusively to Allah. No human being, tribe, or culture has the right to declare something lawful or unlawful without clear evidence from the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The pagans of Makkah had invented superstitious customs regarding cattle and crops, such as setting aside portions for their idols and forbidding certain animals without any basis. Allah challenges them: if you claim to follow Him, then where is His command for these prohibitions?
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own life. How often do we follow inherited traditions, cultural norms, or personal desires without checking whether they align with Allah's guidance? Islam is a complete way of life, and its beauty lies in the fact that every rule and regulation comes from the All-Wise, Who knows what is best for His creation. When you submit to Allah's law, you find peace and contentment, knowing that you are not following the whims of people but the command of the Creator.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that the halal is clear and the haram is clear. So let us purify our intentions, seek knowledge from authentic sources, and never attribute to Allah what He has not said. Indeed, the greatest injustice is to speak about Allah without knowledge. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from falsehood.
