Surah Yusuf — Verse 13

• لَيَحْزُنُنِي: It grieves me deeply and causes me sorrow.

• غَافِلُونَ: Negligent, heedless, distracted, or unmindful.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Ya‘qūb (Jacob, peace be upon him) addressed his sons with a heart full of tenderness and paternal concern. He said: "Indeed, it deeply grieves me that you should take him (Yūsuf) away with you." This was not mere sentimentality; it was the natural ache of a father's heart, for Yūsuf was the dearest of his children, and his presence was a source of comfort and joy to him. The separation, even for a short time, weighed heavily upon him.

He then expressed his second fear: "And I fear that the wolf may eat him while you are heedless of him." He was concerned that while his sons were occupied with their activities—grazing the flocks, playing, or being distracted—the wolf might seize the opportunity to attack the young boy, who was still tender in age and vulnerable. This fear was not born of doubt in his sons' abilities, but of the natural anxiety of a loving father who could not bear the thought of losing his beloved child.

This verse beautifully illustrates the depth of paternal love and the protective instinct that Allah placed in the hearts of parents. It also shows us that even the prophets experienced human emotions—love, fear, and sorrow—yet they remained patient and trusting in Allah's decree. The response of Ya‘qūb here is a lesson for every parent and guardian: to care for and protect those under their charge, and to express that love openly and sincerely. At the same time, it teaches us that while we take all necessary precautions, we must ultimately place our trust in Allah, for He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful.
