Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yarta' (يَرْتَعْ): To roam freely, graze, and enjoy oneself with vigor and delight.
- Yal'ab (يَلْعَبْ): To play and engage in wholesome, permissible recreation.
- Lahafizoon (لَحَافِظُونَ): Truly guarding and protecting him from any harm.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, came to their father Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, seeking permission to take their young brother Yusuf with them into the open countryside the following day. They said: "Send him with us tomorrow so that he may roam freely, enjoy himself, and play in the vast open land." They assured their father, "And indeed, we will surely be his protectors," meaning they would watch over him and shield him from any danger or harm that might befall him.
Their words were crafted to sound caring and reassuring, yet beneath this sweet speech lay a hidden intention of envy and malice. They wanted to separate Yusuf from his father to carry out their sinister plan. The father, however, was not fully convinced, as his love for Yusuf and his prophetic insight made him cautious. This verse highlights the contrast between outward words and inner intentions—a reminder that not every promise of safety is sincere, and that a believer must balance trust in others with prudent vigilance.
Da'wah Reflection:
This scene teaches us a profound lesson about human nature and the tests of life. The brothers' request seemed innocent and even loving—who would deny a child the joy of playing in nature? Yet their hearts concealed darkness. From this, we learn that words alone are not enough; actions and sincerity must align. As Muslims, we are called to be people of integrity, whose speech matches our hearts, and whose promises are kept with honor. The Qur'an invites us to reflect on this story so that we may guard our own hearts from envy and deceit, and raise our children in an environment of trust, honesty, and mutual care. Indeed, Allah, the All-Knowing, sees what is hidden in breasts, and He is the Best of Protectors for those who put their trust in Him. Let us strive to be among those whose outward words and inward states are both pleasing to Allah, and let us teach our families the beauty of truthfulness, for it is the foundation of a righteous community.
