Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿuṣbah (عُصْبَةٌ): A strong group or band of people, typically referring to a number of individuals united together, here indicating a group of ten.
  • khāsirūn (خَاسِرُونَ): Losers, those who have suffered loss, ruin, or failure—in this context, meaning they would be utterly worthless and incapable of any good.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The brothers of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, responded to their father’s concern about sending Yusuf with them by saying: “If the wolf were to eat him while we are a strong, united group—ten able men—then we would indeed be complete losers, worthless and of no benefit to anyone.” They argued that such an outcome would be impossible because their very strength and numbers would protect him. Yet, in saying this, they were making a solemn pledge, as if swearing by Allah that they would safeguard him. Their words carried a tone of reassurance, but beneath it lay a hidden deception, for they had already conspired against him. They presented themselves as capable guardians, but their hearts were filled with envy and ill intent. This verse highlights the contrast between their outward claims and their inner reality—a reminder that words alone do not guarantee truth, and that Allah, who knows all secrets, was fully aware of their scheme. For the believer, this is a profound lesson: sincerity in speech must be matched by sincerity in action, for Allah sees what lies within the chest. It also teaches us to place our trust in Allah alone, not in human strength or numbers, for true protection comes only from Him.

Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians.

So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."
