Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Sawwalat (سَوَّلَتْ): Made something appear attractive and pleasing; embellished and enticed. It refers to the soul's tendency to beautify a wrong action until it seems reasonable.
- Sabrun Jameel (صَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ): Beautiful, dignified patience — patience without complaint, without distress, and without any sense of resentment toward Allah's decree.
- Al-'Aleem (الْعَلِيمُ): The All-Knowing — the One whose knowledge encompasses every hidden detail and every unspoken feeling.
- Al-Hakeem (الْحَكِيمُ): The All-Wise — the One who places everything in its perfect place and whose plans are beyond human comprehension.
The Interpretation:
When the brothers returned to their father without Benjamin, and told him the story of the theft — just as they had once told him a fabricated story about Joseph — the Prophet Ya'qub (peace be upon him) did not accept their account. He saw through their words with the clarity of a father's heart and the wisdom of a prophet. He said to them: "No, the matter is not as you claim. Rather, your own souls have made this deed seem fair and attractive to you. Your inner desires have decorated this plot until it appeared justified in your eyes — just as they did before with Joseph."
Then he declared: "So beautiful patience is the fitting response." This is the patience of the believer who does not complain to creation, who does not lose hope, and who does not let grief overcome his trust in Allah. It is a patience that is accompanied by complete submission to the divine will, and it turns to Allah alone in times of hardship.
And then, with the hope of a prophet who never despairs of Allah's mercy, he added: "Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me together" — meaning Joseph, Benjamin, and the eldest brother who remained in Egypt. He did not ask for just one of them; he asked for all of them, because his hope in Allah was vast and unbounded.
He concluded with the reason for his unwavering hope: "Indeed, He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise." He knows the pain that fills his heart, and He knows the best way to relieve it. His wisdom governs every affair, and His plan is always more beautiful than what we can imagine.
A Message for the Heart:
Dear believer, look at the patience of Ya'qub — a man who lost his beloved son Joseph, then lost Benjamin, and then his eldest son stayed behind in Egypt. Yet he did not despair. He did not raise his voice in complaint. He did not accuse others unjustly. Instead, he turned to Allah with a beautiful patience and a hopeful heart.
This is the character of the believer: when trials come, they do not break him — they refine him. He knows that Allah's knowledge encompasses his situation, and Allah's wisdom has chosen the best path for him. So hold on to patience, for after every beautiful patience comes a beautiful reward. And never stop hoping in Allah, for His mercy is wider than your trials, and His plan is greater than your imagination.
