Explanation of the Verse:
Prophet Yaʿqūb (Jacob), peace be upon him, turned away from his sons in distress, his heart constricted by their words and the painful news they had brought. He uttered a cry of profound sorrow: "Oh, my grief for Yūsuf!" — a lament that revealed the depth of a father's love and longing for his lost son. His eyes had turned white from weeping — the blackness of his pupils faded away due to the relentless tears he shed, until he lost his sight. Yet despite this overwhelming sorrow, he remained *kaẓīm* — a man who swallowed his grief, concealing it from others, never allowing his pain to turn into despair or rebellion against the decree of Allah. His heart was filled with sadness, but his tongue remained patient, and his soul remained steadfast in trust in his Lord.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse paints a moving portrait of human emotion intertwined with profound faith. Yaʿqūb’s grief was natural — for the heart that loves deeply feels deeply. Yet what distinguishes the believer is not the absence of pain, but the manner in which pain is carried. He did not curse his fate, nor did he lose hope in Allah’s mercy. He wept, but he did not waver. He mourned, but he did not abandon patience. This teaches us that Islam does not forbid feeling sorrow; rather, it elevates it into a means of drawing closer to Allah through patience (*ṣabr*) and trust (*tawakkul*). When trials strike you, let your tears flow if they must — but let your heart remain anchored in the certainty that Allah’s plan is perfect, and that after every hardship comes ease. The story of Yaʿqūb reminds us that even in the darkest moments, the believer’s light of hope never extinguishes, for he knows that Allah hears every sigh and sees every tear.
