Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- A'ma (أَعْمَىٰ): Blind — here referring to blindness of the heart and mind, not physical sight. It describes one who is unable to perceive the truth despite its clarity.
- Ulul-Albab (أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ): People of sound intellect and pure understanding — those who use their reason to grasp deeper realities beyond the surface.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse presents a profound rhetorical question that strikes at the very core of human reasoning: *"Is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind?"*
The answer is self-evident — no, they are absolutely not equal. The one who recognizes the divine origin of the revelation, who sees it as the absolute truth and responds to it with faith and submission, is fundamentally different from the one who remains blind to it, refusing to see the light despite its brilliance. The first has opened his heart to guidance; the second has shut his eyes to clarity itself.
The verse then concludes with a beautiful and empowering statement: *"Only those of sound intellect will take heed."* This is not a limitation but an honor — it tells us that true intelligence, genuine wisdom, and real understanding are found in those who reflect upon the signs of Allah and allow the revelation to transform their lives. The Qur'an repeatedly calls upon humanity to think, to ponder, and to use the very intellect that Allah has gifted them. The one who knows the truth and lives by it has truly used their mind for its noblest purpose.
This verse is a gentle yet powerful invitation: it asks every reader to examine themselves — are you among those who see, or among those who choose blindness? Are you using the intellect Allah gave you to recognize His guidance, or are you ignoring it? The choice is yours, and the reward for those who see is beyond imagination — eternal success in this life and the next.
The people of sound intellect are not merely those with academic degrees or worldly cleverness; they are those whose hearts are open, whose minds are pure, and who recognize that the ultimate truth lies in what Allah has revealed. They are the ones who benefit from reminders, who learn from lessons, and who respond to their Lord with sincerity and obedience. May Allah make us among them.
