Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُوفُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ — “They fulfill the covenant of Allah”: They keep their promises and commitments made to Allah, whether these are obligations He has commanded or pledges they have made in His name.
- الْمِيثَاقَ — “The solemn pledge”: A firm, binding agreement that is strongly affirmed, such as the covenant taken from believers to worship Allah alone and obey His commands.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a key quality of those who possess sound intellect and are guided to the truth: they are people who honor their commitments to Allah. They fulfill whatever Allah has obligated upon them—such as faith, prayer, honesty, and justice—and they do not break the solemn pledges they have made, whether those pledges are with Allah directly (like vows and acts of worship) or with other people (like promises, contracts, and agreements). The verse emphasizes that breaking a covenant is a sign of hypocrisy and weak faith, while fulfilling it is a mark of true believers who fear Allah and understand the weight of their words.
The verse comes in the context of praising those who reflect on the truth and respond to it. After mentioning that only people of understanding take heed, Allah describes them as those who keep their promises. This shows that true intellect is not merely about knowledge, but about translating that knowledge into upright character and steadfast commitment to Allah’s commands. They treat their relationship with Allah and with people with the utmost seriousness, knowing that every covenant will be asked about on the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own life: How do you treat your promises to Allah—your prayers, your obligations, your word of honor? And how do you treat your promises to others—your family, your friends, your business partners? Islam teaches that a believer is someone whose word is their bond. When you fulfill your promises, you build trust with people and with your Lord, and you open the door to Allah’s love and mercy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.” So strive to be among the truthful ones—those who honor their covenants—and you will find peace in this life and success in the next. Allah loves those who are faithful to their commitments, and He has prepared for them gardens of delight and a great reward. Let this verse be a reminder that your word is a trust, and your covenant with Allah is the most precious bond you hold.
