Key Words and Meanings:

  • Dharchum (ذَرْهُمْ): Leave them, let them be — a command to the Prophet ﷺ to abandon trying to convince the obstinate disbelievers for now.
  • Ya'kulū (يَأْكُلُوا): They eat — referring to their unchecked indulgence in worldly pleasures, like cattle grazing without thought.
  • Yatamatta'ū (يَتَمَتَّعُوا): They enjoy — taking full pleasure in the fleeting comforts and desires of this life.
  • Yulhihim (يُلْهِهِمْ): Distracts them — turning their attention away from what truly matters.
  • Al-Amal (الْأَمَلُ): Hope/longing — specifically, the false hope of long life and endless worldly pursuits that occupies their hearts.
  • Fasawfa ya'lamūn (فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ): Then they will come to know — a stern warning of the inevitable consequence they will face.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a profound reassurance and a firm warning directed at the disbelievers. The command "Leave them" is not an abandonment of the mission, but rather a declaration that the Prophet has fulfilled his duty of conveying the truth — and now, those who persist in rejection are left to their own devices.

Allah describes their state with striking imagery: they eat and enjoy themselves like cattle, consumed by the immediate gratification of their desires. They are so engrossed in the pursuit of worldly pleasures — wealth, status, leisure, and fleeting joys — that they are utterly distracted by their hopes and dreams of a long life. Their false optimism ("al-amal") keeps them from reflecting on the reality of death, the accountability of the Hereafter, and the consequences of their arrogance.

The verse then delivers a chilling promise: "Then they will come to know." This is not a vague threat, but a certainty. They will know the bitter outcome of their choices when they stand before their Lord on the Day of Judgment, when every moment of heedlessness and every act of defiance is laid bare. They will realize — too late — that the life they clung to was nothing but a mirage, and that the truth they rejected was their only salvation.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for all of us. It gently but firmly reminds us that this world, with all its attractions, is not the final destination. The one who lives only to eat, enjoy, and chase endless hopes — without pausing to ask, "Why am I here? Where am I going?" — is walking a path of loss, even if it appears pleasant for a while.

But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left us in darkness. He has sent us the Qur'an and the guidance of His Prophet ﷺ to wake us from this slumber. Every prayer we offer, every act of kindness, every moment we spend in remembrance of Allah is a step away from the heedlessness described in this verse and toward eternal success.

So let us not be among those who are "left" to their distractions. Let us be among those who hear the call, reflect deeply, and act before the day comes when knowledge will no longer benefit. The door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, and the reward of the Hereafter is far greater than anything this world can offer. Seize this moment — for tomorrow may be too late.
