Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Fa-sda'" (فَاصْدَعْ): This verb carries the meaning of "to split" or "to cleave," and in this context, it means to proclaim openly and decisively, to the point where the truth is clearly separated from falsehood, just as dawn splits the darkness of night.
- "Bimā tu'mar" (بِمَا تُؤْمَر): "With what you are commanded" — i.e., the divine message, the call to Tawheed (monotheism), and the commandments of Allah.
- "A'rid" (أَعْرِضْ): "Turn away" — meaning to disregard, ignore, and not pay attention to.
- "Al-Mushrikīn" (الْمُشْرِكِينَ): Those who associate partners with Allah in worship.
The Interpretation:
This noble verse is a direct, empowering command from Allah to His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and by extension, to every believer who carries the torch of truth. After a period of patient, quiet propagation, Allah now commands His Prophet to step forward with full confidence and proclaim the message of Islam openly and publicly. The word "sad'" (صدع) is powerful — it means to split or break through, like the light of dawn shattering the darkness of night. This is not a timid whisper; it is a bold, unmistakable declaration of the truth that separates clearly between right and wrong, between faith and disbelief.
Allah is telling His Messenger: Do not fear the opposition, do not be intimidated by the numbers or the power of the polytheists, and do not soften the message to please anyone. Your duty is only to deliver what you have been commanded — the pure, unaltered word of your Lord. The outcome is in Allah's hands.
Then comes the second part of the command: "And turn away from the polytheists." This does not mean to abandon calling them to the truth, but rather to disregard their mockery, their threats, their insults, and their attempts to deter you. Do not engage in futile arguments with them, do not be distressed by their rejection, and do not let their words affect your resolve. Allah has absolved you of their false accusations and has guaranteed your protection. Your mission is to convey, and their response is their own responsibility.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: when you are certain of your cause and it is the cause of Allah, you must proclaim it with courage and clarity, without fear of blame or opposition. At the same time, you must develop a heart that is unattached to the reactions of people — neither elated by their praise nor disheartened by their rejection. Your focus is solely on pleasing your Creator.
How beautiful is this divine guidance! It frees the believer from the shackles of people-pleasing and elevates them to the rank of those who speak the truth without compromise. It reminds us that the success of the message is not measured by how many people accept it, but by the sincerity and boldness with which it is delivered. And when you stand for the truth, Allah stands with you — and whoever has Allah on their side has already won.
