Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAm-mā (عَمَّا): "About what" — refers to the deeds and actions being questioned.
- Kānū yaʿmalūn (كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ): "They used to do" — indicating continuous, habitual actions in the past.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the preceding oath, where Allah Almighty swears by His Lordhood that He will certainly call every person to account on the Day of Resurrection. The meaning here is: "We will surely question them about all that they used to do in the worldly life."
This includes their division and distortion of the Qur'an through their false claims and fabrications, their worship of idols and false deities, and every other sin and transgression they committed. The questioning is comprehensive — nothing of their deeds, whether great or small, open or hidden, will be left unexamined.
The verse serves as a stern warning and a powerful deterrent, reminding those who persist in wrongdoing that they cannot escape Allah's reckoning. Every action, word, and intention will be brought forth, and they will be held fully accountable for all of it.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: the Lord of the heavens and the earth has taken an oath upon Himself to question every soul about its deeds. This is not a matter of doubt or uncertainty — it is an absolute certainty that will undoubtedly come to pass.
How beautiful it is for the believer who realizes this reality and lives accordingly! Such a person examines their actions before they are examined, weighs their deeds before they are weighed, and hastens to repentance before the door is closed. They understand that this worldly life is but a fleeting moment, while the reckoning is eternal.
Let this verse awaken in you a sense of mindfulness (taqwa) in every moment. Before you speak, think: will I be pleased to meet Allah with these words? Before you act, ask yourself: is this deed one that will bring me joy on that Day when every secret will be exposed?
The One who took this oath is the Most Merciful, the Most Just. His questioning is not out of need, but out of perfect wisdom and justice. For those who did good, there is the glad tidings of His reward; for those who did evil, there is His just recompense. Turn to Him now, before that Day arrives, and make your deeds a treasure that will light your path on the Day when all deeds are brought to light.
