Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

They preferred, chose, and loved one thing over another.
The worldly life with all its fleeting pleasures, wealth, and temporary gains.
The Hereafter — the eternal life with its everlasting rewards and punishments.
Does not guide — meaning, does not lead to the path of truth and righteousness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse explains the reason behind the severe punishment and divine wrath that befalls those who utter words of disbelief and turn back from faith after having believed. The cause is crystal clear: they preferred the life of this world over the Hereafter. They chose the temporary, decaying pleasures of the world — its wealth, status, and fleeting desires — over the eternal bliss of Paradise and the everlasting reward that awaits the believers.

When a person's heart becomes attached to worldly gains, they may find it easier to compromise their faith for a material benefit, or to reject the truth because accepting it would cost them their social standing, wealth, or comfort. This is the disease of the heart that leads to apostasy and disbelief.

The verse then adds a profound truth: Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. This does not mean that Allah is unjust — far from it. Rather, it means that when a person persistently chooses disbelief and turns away from the signs of Allah, their heart becomes sealed, and they lose the ability to perceive the truth. Guidance is a gift from Allah, but it is granted to those who sincerely seek it with an open heart. Those who deliberately reject the truth after it has become clear to them — and even prefer this world over the Hereafter — deprive themselves of this divine gift.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound verse. It teaches us a fundamental lesson about the priorities of life. This world, no matter how long a person lives in it, is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternal Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The example of this world in comparison to the Hereafter is like a drop of water compared to the ocean."

So ask yourself: What are you living for? Are you investing your time, energy, and efforts in what will last forever, or are you chasing after what will inevitably fade away? The wise person is the one who uses this world as a farm for the Hereafter — working for the eternal life while enjoying the permissible blessings of this world, without ever letting the world take precedence over their faith.

Let this verse be a reminder to re-evaluate your priorities. Do not let the glitter of this world blind you from the everlasting success that awaits those who remain steadfast upon the truth. The choice is yours — and the wise choice is clear.

📜 Verse 105-109 — An-Nahl

They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of Allah, and it is those who are the liars.
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment;
That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allah has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless.
Assuredly, it is they, in the Hereafter, who will be the losers.
