Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- طَبَعَ (Taba'a): Sealed or stamped upon, meaning that a covering is placed over something so that it can no longer receive or perceive what is outside of it.
- الْغَافِلُونَ (Al-Ghafilun): The heedless, those who are unmindful and neglectful of what truly matters.
Explanation of the Verse:
These are the people—those who turned back to disbelief after having believed—whom Allah has sealed their hearts, their hearing, and their sight. The seal upon their hearts means that no light of guidance can reach them, and they become incapable of understanding admonition or reflecting upon the truth. Their hearing is sealed so that they do not listen to the verses of Allah with any benefit or contemplation; rather, they hear only with their ears but not with their minds. Their sight is sealed so that they do not perceive the signs and proofs that point to Allah’s oneness and His power, even though these signs are all around them. And these are the truly heedless ones—unaware of what leads to their happiness or misery, and unmindful of the punishment that Allah has prepared for them because of their rejection and arrogance.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse serves as a profound reminder of the greatest blessing Allah has bestowed upon us: the ability to see, hear, and understand. These faculties are not merely physical tools; they are gateways to guidance and salvation. When a person uses their heart to reflect, their ears to listen to the truth, and their eyes to observe the wonders of creation, they open themselves to a life of purpose and peace. But when these gifts are neglected or misused, they become barriers rather than bridges. Let this verse inspire you to protect your heart from hardness, your ears from heedlessness, and your eyes from blindness to the signs of your Lord. Turn to Allah now, before the seal is placed, for His mercy is vast and His door of repentance remains open to all who sincerely seek Him. Do not be among the heedless; be among those who see, hear, and understand—and who live a life that pleases their Creator.
