Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ni'mat Allah (نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ): The blessings and favors of Allah upon His creation.
- Tuḥṣūhā (تُحْصُوهَا): To count, enumerate, or fully comprehend their extent and number.
Explanation of the Verse:
If you — O humanity — were to attempt to count the blessings of Allah upon you, you would never be able to enumerate them, let alone fully comprehend their vastness and diversity. From the air you breathe to the water you drink, from the beating of your hearts to the guidance of your minds, from the earth beneath your feet to the heavens above — every moment of your existence is saturated with His favors, both visible and hidden, both in times of ease and in times of hardship.
Yet, despite this overwhelming abundance of blessings, Allah does not hold you to an impossible standard. He knows your weakness and your forgetfulness. He knows that you often fail to recognize His favors, and that you fall short in expressing gratitude as He truly deserves. And so, He tells you: "Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." He is Forgiving — pardoning your shortcomings in thanking Him for His blessings. He is Merciful — not cutting off His provisions from you because of your negligence and sins, nor hastening punishment upon you for your ingratitude.
This verse carries a profound and heartwarming message: Allah's generosity is not conditional upon your perfect gratitude. He continues to shower you with His blessings even when you forget to thank Him, and He opens the door of repentance and forgiveness for you whenever you turn back to Him.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and look around you. Count the breaths you take in a single day — can you number them? Count the beats of your heart — can you tally them? Count the blessings you have received since morning — can you reach the end? The answer is no, and this is precisely the point. Your Lord has placed before you an ocean of favors, and He asks only that you recognize a drop of it and respond with gratitude.
Let this verse awaken in your heart a deep sense of love for your Creator. He is not a harsh master demanding perfection; He is a Merciful Lord who knows your limits and forgives your shortcomings. When you stumble in gratitude, He does not withdraw His blessings. When you fall into sin, He does not abandon you. Instead, He waits for your return, ready to forgive and continue His care.
So, begin today — thank Him with your tongue, your heart, and your limbs. Let gratitude become your daily language, and let the awareness of His endless blessings transform your life into one of contentment and peace. For the One who has given you so much, and who forgives your failings with such mercy, is worthy of all your love, all your praise, and all your devotion.
