Translation — Tafsir
Key Words:
- Abwāb (أبواب): Gates or doors.
- Jahannam (جهنم): Hellfire; one of the names of Hell.
- Khālidīn (خالدين): Abiding forever, eternally.
- Mathwā (مثوى): Dwelling place, abode, or resting place.
- Al-Mutakabbirīn (المتكبرين): The arrogant ones — those who proudly refuse to submit to Allah and reject His commands out of haughtiness.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the disbelievers and the arrogant are rebuked and humiliated on the Day of Judgment, they are commanded with a stern, humiliating order: "Enter the gates of Hell!" Each gate corresponds to their deeds — every act of disobedience, every act of arrogance, and every rejection of truth has a door through which they are cast. They are told they will remain therein forever — no exit, no relief, no end. Then comes a devastating verdict: "How evil is the abode of the arrogant!" This is a declaration that Hell is the most wretched dwelling for those who were too proud to bow to their Creator, too haughty to accept His messengers, and too arrogant to worship Him alone.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: arrogance was the very first sin committed against Allah, when Iblis refused to prostrate to Adam out of pride. And arrogance remains the root of every rejection of faith. The gates of Hell are open for those who exalt themselves above the truth, but the gates of Paradise are open for those who humble themselves before their Lord. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to guide us, to save us from these gates, and to lead us to eternal bliss. Do not let pride — pride in wealth, status, intellect, or lineage — blind you from the simple, beautiful truth: that you are a servant of Allah, and He alone deserves your worship and obedience. Humble yourself now, in this life, so that you may be raised in honor in the Hereafter. For whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah elevates him. And whoever is arrogant, Allah degrades him — and his final abode shall be the worst of all dwellings. May Allah protect us all from the fate of the arrogant, and grant us the humility of His righteous servants. Ameen.
