Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ma Yakrahun" (ما يكرهون): What they dislike and detest for themselves — specifically, daughters, as they despised having female children.
- "Al-Husna" (الحسنى): The best outcome, the finest reward, or the goodly state they falsely claim for themselves.
- "La Jarama" (لا جرم): Truly, certainly, without doubt — an emphatic affirmation of what follows.
- "Mufratun" (مفروطون): Those who are neglected, abandoned, or cast off — left to be forgotten, or sent ahead to the Fire.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the profound contradiction and moral corruption of those who attribute to Allah what they themselves abhor, while simultaneously claiming the best for themselves. They assign to Allah — exalted and pure is He — daughters, whom they despise for themselves. When one of them was given news of a baby girl, his face darkened with grief, and he would hide from his people in shame. Yet they dared to claim that Allah has daughters, while they reserved sons for themselves — the very thing they prized and desired.
Beyond this, their tongues utter sheer falsehood, claiming: "We shall have the best outcome — the finest reward and the most honorable station with Allah." They say this while denying the resurrection and mocking the messengers who warned them of accountability. Their claim is a lie upon a lie, for they neither believe in the Hereafter nor act in a way that would earn them any good.
The verse then delivers a decisive, irrevocable verdict: Truly, theirs is the Fire — not the goodly reward they fantasize about, but the blazing punishment they denied. And they will be "mufratun" — neglected in it, forgotten, abandoned to their torment with no one to rescue them, no intercessor to save them, and no way out. They will be left to burn, cast far away from Allah's mercy, just as they cast away the truth and despised His messengers.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How astonishing is the state of one who rejects the truth yet expects the best reward! How can a soul claim honor with Allah while attributing to Him what it deems shameful for itself? This verse invites every sincere heart to purify its concept of Allah — to know Him as He deserves, free of all false attributions, and to speak only truth about Him. It also serves as a stern warning: no one will be given "the best" merely by claiming it. The best outcome belongs to those who believe, do righteous deeds, and submit to Allah with sincerity. Let us not be like those who contradict themselves — attributing imperfection to Allah while expecting perfection for themselves. Rather, let us humble ourselves before our Lord, speak truthfully of Him, and strive for the goodly reward through faith and obedience — for His mercy is near to those who do good.
