Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Min ba'dihi" — after his (Pharaoh's) destruction.
- "Iskanu al-ard" — dwell/settle in the land (referring to the blessed land of Sham/Palestine and Egypt).
- "Wa'd al-akhirah" — the promise of the Hereafter, meaning the Day of Resurrection.
- "Lafifan" — all together, gathered in mixed crowds, coming from every direction.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah drowned Pharaoh and his army in the sea — a decisive sign of His power and justice — He addressed the Children of Israel with a new command: *"Dwell in the land."* This was a divine invitation to establish themselves in the blessed lands of Sham and Egypt, to build a life of stability, gratitude, and obedience to Allah after centuries of oppression and wandering. It was a fresh start, a reward for their patience, and a test of how they would use this newfound freedom.
Then Allah declares: *"And when the promise of the Hereafter comes, We will bring you forth as a mixed crowd."* This is a reminder that no matter how long nations settle, prosper, or scatter across the earth, the final appointment is certain. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather all of humanity — including the Children of Israel and every soul that ever lived — from their graves to the plain of judgment. They will come *lafifan*: intermingled, crowded together, no distinction between rich or poor, ruler or subject, powerful or weak. All will stand before their Lord, stripped of worldly titles, awaiting His perfect justice.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: worldly settlement and success are temporary. The earth — with all its beauty, resources, and opportunities — is but a passing station. The true home is the Hereafter, and the gathering on that Day is inevitable. So while we "dwell" in this life, we must dwell as mindful servants — building, working, and living with the awareness that our final return is to Allah, where every deed will be weighed.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is this Qur'anic guidance! It teaches us that even after victory and liberation, the believer's heart should not become attached to the world as an end in itself. The land is a trust, not a permanent abode. The promise of the Hereafter keeps us balanced — we strive in this world with sincerity, yet we never forget that the ultimate meeting with Allah is near. Let this verse inspire you to live with purpose: settle your affairs with excellence, but keep your eyes on the eternal horizon. For when that promised Day arrives, we will all be gathered — and the one who lived for Allah will find peace, while the one who lived only for the world will find regret. May Allah make us among those who dwell in this life with gratitude and meet the Hereafter with success.
