Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ar-Rūḥ (الروح): The soul/spirit — the essence of life that animates the body. It refers to the true reality and nature of the soul, which is a matter of divine knowledge.
- Min amri Rabbī (من أمر ربي): From the command/affair of my Lord — meaning it originates from God’s exclusive domain of knowledge and decree, not from human comprehension.
- Ūtītum (أوتيتم): You have been given — referring to all of humanity, believers and disbelievers alike.
- Illā qalīlā (إلا قليلا): Except a little — a small portion compared to the infinite knowledge of Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers of Quraysh, prompted by the People of the Book, came to you, O Messenger, asking about the true nature of the soul — its essence, its origin, and how it relates to the body. They asked this not out of sincere curiosity, but as a test and a challenge, hoping to catch you in a moment of ignorance. So Allah instructed you to respond with clarity and humility: "The soul is from the command of my Lord." This means that the full reality of the soul is a matter that belongs exclusively to Allah’s knowledge — it is part of His unseen affairs, which He has not fully revealed to any created being. No human intellect, no matter how advanced, can grasp its complete nature, for it is beyond the reach of sensory perception and rational deduction.
Then Allah adds a profound statement that addresses all of humanity: "And you have not been given of knowledge except a little." This is a gentle yet powerful reminder that whatever knowledge humans possess — in science, philosophy, medicine, or any field — is but a drop in the vast ocean of Allah’s infinite wisdom. Compared to what Allah knows, human knowledge is minuscule, like a speck of dust on a vast desert. This verse humbles the arrogant mind and invites every person to recognize their limits, and to turn to the One who knows all — the Creator of the soul, the Giver of life, and the Source of all truth.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every seeker of truth. When you encounter questions that exceed the boundaries of human reason — like the true nature of the soul, the reality of the afterlife, or the wisdom behind divine decrees — do not despair or reject faith. Instead, recognize that the One who created you knows you better than you know yourself. The soul that breathes within you is a miracle from your Lord, a sign of His power and mercy. If you cannot fully understand your own soul, how can you claim to comprehend everything about your Creator? Let this verse inspire you to embrace humility, to trust in Allah’s wisdom, and to seek knowledge that benefits your faith and your life. For the little knowledge you have is a gift from Him — use it to draw closer to Him, and He will open for you doors of understanding in this world and the next. Indeed, the Qur’an is the light that guides you through the darkness of ignorance, and the soul is but a witness to the greatness of its Maker. So submit to Allah with a sincere heart, and you will find peace that surpasses all human understanding.
