Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

We would surely take away or remove.
That which We have revealed to you, i.e., the Qur'an.
A protector, advocate, or one who could intercede on your behalf to restore it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse carries a profound and humbling message to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and by extension, to all believers. Allah is reminding His Messenger that the Qur'an, despite its immense value and miraculous nature, is not something the Prophet possesses by his own power or merit. Rather, it is a trust and a gift from Allah alone, preserved by His will and mercy.

Allah says: "And if We willed, We could surely take away that which We have revealed to you." This means that if Allah so desired, He could erase the Qur'an entirely from the Prophet's heart, from the pages of the manuscripts, and from the memories of mankind — leaving no trace of it whatsoever. This is not a threat, but a powerful reminder of Allah's absolute sovereignty and the complete dependence of creation upon Him. It echoes the earlier verse where Allah withheld the knowledge of the soul from the Prophet and all of humanity, showing that knowledge, revelation, and guidance are entirely in Allah's hands.

Then Allah adds: "Then you would find no one to protect you against Us." This means that if Allah were to take away the revelation, no one — not any angel, prophet, or human — could intercede or act as an advocate to bring it back. No one could argue with Allah or defend the Prophet's case to restore what was taken. This emphasizes that Allah answers to no one, and His will is absolute and irresistible.

The wisdom behind this verse is multifaceted. First, it instills humility in the believer — reminding us that every blessing, especially the blessing of faith and knowledge of the Qur'an, is a favor from Allah that we must cherish and be grateful for. Second, it serves as a warning to those who might take the Qur'an for granted or treat it lightly: if they neglect it, disobey it, or turn away from it, they risk losing its light from their hearts. Third, it reassures the believer that since Allah has promised to preserve the Qur'an (as stated in Surah Al-Hijr: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an, and indeed, We will be its guardian"), His promise is certain and His protection is guaranteed.

This verse also carries a beautiful call to action for every Muslim. It invites us to reflect: How often do we open the Qur'an, recite it, ponder its meanings, and implement its teachings? If we neglect this divine gift, we may find our hearts gradually becoming distant from it — and that is a form of loss that no worldly gain can compensate. Let us therefore hold fast to the Book of Allah, recite it with sincerity, act upon its commands, and make it the companion of our daily lives. For when the Qur'an lives in our hearts, our hearts are alive with the light of Allah; and when it is lost, nothing can fill that void.

O believer, treasure this Qur'an as the greatest blessing you possess. Let it guide your steps, illuminate your path, and be your intercessor on the Day of Judgment. And never forget that its presence in your life is a mercy from Allah — a mercy that calls for constant gratitude, love, and devotion.

📜 Verse 84-88 — Al-Isra

Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."
And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us.
Except [We have left it with you] as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, His favor upon you has ever been great.
Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."
