Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ḥanānan (حَنَانًا): Compassion, mercy, and tenderness from Allah.
- Zakāh (زَكَاةً): Purity from sins, spiritual cleanliness, and righteousness.
- Taqiyyan (تَقِيًّا): A God-fearing person who is mindful of Allah, obedient to His commands, and avoids His prohibitions.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah describes the blessings He bestowed upon His Prophet Yahyā (John the Baptist), peace be upon him. After mentioning that Yahyā was given wisdom and judgment while still a child, Allah now adds: "And [We gave him] compassion from Us and purity, and he was God-fearing."
The "compassion" (ḥanānan) refers to the deep mercy and tenderness that Allah placed in Yahyā’s heart—not only toward his parents but toward all of creation. This was a special gift from Allah, a divine mercy that made him gentle, loving, and caring. It also signifies Allah’s own mercy upon him, as He chose him for this noble station.
The "purity" (zakāh) means that Allah purified Yahyā from sins and faults, making him spiritually clean and blessed. This purity was a great honor, as it meant his heart, actions, and intentions were free from corruption. Some scholars also interpret this as a "charity" from Allah to his parents and his community, for his very existence and righteous character were a mercy to them.
Finally, Allah describes Yahyā as "God-fearing" (taqiyyan) — a man who was deeply conscious of Allah in every moment. He obeyed Allah’s commands, avoided what was forbidden, and lived a life of devotion and sincerity. His fear of Allah was not out of terror, but out of profound love, reverence, and awareness that Allah is always watching.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse beautifully illustrates how Allah honors those who dedicate themselves to Him. Yahyā, peace be upon him, was not only given knowledge and wisdom but also a heart full of compassion and a soul purified from sin. This teaches us that true success lies in combining knowledge with mercy and purity with action. When we strive to be God-fearing, Allah blesses us with inner peace, compassion for others, and a life of purpose. Let this inspire you to seek Allah’s mercy and purity in your own life—for He is the Most Generous, and He loves to give His servants more than they could ever imagine.
