Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Khudh" (خذ): Take, receive, or grasp firmly.
  • "Al-Kitab" (الكتاب): The Book — here referring specifically to the Torah, the divine scripture revealed to the Children of Israel at that time.
  • "Bi-Quwwah" (بقوة): With strength, vigor, earnestness, and determination — meaning to take it seriously with full commitment and diligence.
  • "Al-Hukm" (الحكم): Wisdom, sound judgment, understanding, and discernment — and according to some scholars, prophethood itself.
  • "Sabiyyan" (صبيًا): A young boy, still in his childhood or early youth, before reaching maturity.

The Interpretation:

When Allah granted Prophet Zakariyya (peace be upon him) a son in his old age — a son named Yahya (John the Baptist, peace be upon him) — He blessed this child with extraordinary gifts from the very beginning of his life. Even as a young boy, Yahya was addressed by his Lord with a divine command: *"O Yahya, take the Book with strength!"* This was a call to embrace the Torah with full seriousness — to memorize its words, to deeply understand its meanings, and to implement its teachings in every aspect of life. It was not a casual or half-hearted approach, but one of complete devotion, vigor, and unwavering resolve.

And Allah did not leave him without support. He granted Yahya *"Al-Hukm"* — wisdom, profound understanding, and the ability to judge rightly — while he was still a mere child. This was a remarkable sign of Allah's favor: a young boy, not yet fully grown, already endowed with insight, intelligence, and spiritual maturity that surpassed even many adults. Some scholars have noted that this wisdom included prophethood itself, as Yahya was chosen by Allah to be a prophet and a guide for his people at an exceptionally young age.

This verse carries a beautiful and powerful lesson for all of us, especially for the youth. It shows that age is not a barrier to greatness in the sight of Allah. A young person can be wise, can be devoted, can be a leader and a source of guidance — if they sincerely turn to Allah and take His Book seriously. Yahya's example inspires us to approach the Quran — our own divine Book — with the same "strength": to read it with dedication, to understand it with reflection, and to live by it with commitment. Just as Allah honored Yahya with wisdom at a young age, He can bless anyone who sincerely seeks knowledge and righteousness with insight and understanding beyond their years.

So let us take our relationship with the Quran seriously — not as a mere ritual, but as a living guide. Let us grasp it with strength, just as Yahya grasped the Torah. And let us remember that true wisdom is not measured by age, but by sincerity, devotion, and the light that Allah places in the hearts of those who love Him and follow His guidance.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Maryam

[Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."
So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon.
[Allah] said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy
And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah
And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.
