Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the description of Prophet Yaḥyā (John the Baptist, peace be upon him), highlighting his noble character toward his parents. Allah describes him as "dutiful to his parents" — meaning he was gentle, loving, and caring toward them, always seeking their well-being and happiness. He was not harsh or neglectful, but rather a source of comfort and honor to them.
The verse then emphasizes that he was "not arrogant or disobedient" — meaning he did not display pride toward his parents or toward Allah. He was free from the vices of self-importance and rebellion. His humility was complete: he submitted to Allah’s commands and respected his parents’ authority in all that was good and lawful. This combination of piety toward Allah and kindness toward parents is a hallmark of true righteousness.
This beautiful description teaches us that faith is not merely ritual worship; it is also reflected in how we treat those closest to us. The Prophet Yaḥyā (peace be upon him) embodied this balance perfectly — devoted to his Creator and devoted to his parents. His life is a shining example for every believer to follow.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this: Allah praises Yaḥyā (peace be upon him) not only for his worship but for his character at home. How often do we excel in public acts of devotion yet fall short in kindness to our parents? Islam elevates the treatment of parents to a level of divine command, and this verse reminds us that true greatness lies in humility and compassion. Let us strive to be like Yaḥyā — gentle, grateful, and obedient to Allah and to our parents — so that we may earn the love of our Lord and the peace of a pure heart. Indeed, the path to Paradise begins with a smile to your mother and a kind word to your father.
