Word Meanings:

  • "Wa-huzzi ilayki": "And shake toward you" — a command to move or pull something toward oneself.
  • "Bi-jidh'i al-nakhlah": "The trunk of the palm tree" — the main stem of the date palm.
  • "Tusāqit": "It will drop" — meaning the dates will fall continuously.
  • "Ruṭaban janiyyan": "Fresh, ripe dates" — dates that are moist, sweet, and freshly picked at the moment.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the remarkable story of Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her, during the miraculous birth of Prophet Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him. At a moment of extreme physical weakness and emotional distress, Allah, in His infinite mercy, provided her with clear, practical guidance. She was instructed to shake the trunk of a palm tree toward herself, and in response, fresh, ripe dates would fall upon her.

The command to shake the tree was not a test of her strength — for she was in the throes of labor — but rather a divine lesson in the balance between reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and taking practical means (asbāb). The palm tree, though dry and seemingly barren in the desert, was made to yield its best fruit at that very moment. The dates were described as "janiyyan," meaning freshly gathered, soft, and ready to eat — a perfect nourishment for a woman in her condition, providing energy, hydration, and comfort.

This verse beautifully illustrates that Allah’s provision often comes through the simplest of actions, even when they seem beyond our capacity. It also highlights the honor bestowed upon Maryam: despite her extraordinary circumstances, she was not left without guidance or care. The date palm, a symbol of blessing in the Islamic tradition, became a means of sustenance and a sign of Allah’s power to bring life and goodness from apparent dryness.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this scene: a young woman, alone in a desolate place, facing the greatest trial of her life. Yet, Allah did not abandon her. He gave her a simple, actionable command, and with it, He sent provision that was not only sufficient but excellent in quality. This teaches us that no matter how overwhelming our circumstances may seem, Allah is always near. He knows our weaknesses, and He provides for us in ways we cannot imagine — often through small steps of effort that He blesses beyond measure.

Let this verse inspire you to trust in Allah’s plan, to take action with sincerity, and to remember that His mercy encompasses every situation. Just as the dry palm tree bore fruit for Maryam, Allah can bring forth blessings from the most unlikely places in your life. Turn to Him, rely on Him, and never lose hope in His care.

📜 Verse 23-27 — Maryam

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."
But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "
Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.
