Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yā ukhta Hārūn – "O sister of Hārūn" – meaning "O one resembling Hārūn" in righteousness and devotion, not a literal sibling.
- Imra'a saw' – a man of evil, i.e., one who commits immoral acts, specifically adultery.
- Baghiyyan – an unchaste woman, one who commits fornication or adultery.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures the shocking words of Maryam's (peace be upon her) own people when they saw her carrying the infant 'Īsā (peace be upon him) without a father. They addressed her with astonishment and reproach, saying: "O sister of Hārūn!" – referring to a righteous, devout man from the Children of Israel who was known for his worship and piety. They likened her to him because she came from a family renowned for virtue and devotion, and they expected her to follow in that noble path.
They continued: "Your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother an unchaste woman." Her father, 'Imrān, was a man of integrity and honor, and her mother was a woman of purity and chastity. Both were known for their righteousness and were free from any stain of immorality. So how, they asked, could she, from such a pure and upright household, come with a child without a father? Their words were not an accusation of sin but an expression of utter bewilderment at something that defied all human norms and expectations.
This verse highlights the extraordinary nature of this miracle. Maryam (peace be upon her) was chosen by Allah for a unique purpose, and her purity was so well-known that even her community acknowledged the virtue of her family. Yet, Allah's power transcends all human understanding. He created 'Īsā (peace be upon him) without a father, just as He created Ādam (peace be upon him) without a father or mother, to demonstrate that His will is absolute and His command is simply "Be," and it is.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this story. Maryam (peace be upon her) was a young woman of immense faith and purity, tested with a trial that would shake the strongest of hearts. Yet she remained steadfast, trusting in Allah's plan. Her people's words, though harsh, were a testament to her family's noble character – a family that was a beacon of righteousness in their community.
This verse teaches us the value of a good reputation built on faith and righteous deeds. It also reminds us that Allah's miracles are not bound by the laws of nature we observe. When He wills something, nothing can stand in His way. So, let us strengthen our faith in Allah's infinite power and wisdom, and let us strive to be like the family of 'Imrān – people of purity, devotion, and unwavering trust in their Lord. For Allah honors those who honor Him, and He never abandons those who place their complete reliance in Him.
