Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Iʿtazala (اعْتَزَلَهُمْ): He distanced himself from them, separated himself completely, and left their company.
  • Mā yaʿbudūn (مَا يَعْبُدُونَ): What they worshipped — referring to their idols and false deities.
  • Wahabnā (وَهَبْنَا): We granted or bestowed as a gift — indicating that the child was a divine gift, not earned by human effort.
  • Isḥāq (إِسْحَاقَ): Isaac, the son of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him).
  • Yaʿqūb (يَعْقُوبَ): Jacob, the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham (peace be upon them all).
  • Kullan (كُلًّا): Each and every one of them — referring to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:

When Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) realized that his people — including his own father — were stubbornly clinging to their idol worship and rejecting the message of pure monotheism, he made a decisive break. He physically and spiritually separated himself from them and from everything they worshipped besides Allah. This was not an easy step; it meant leaving his family, his tribe, and his homeland, all for the sake of Allah alone.

But Allah never abandons those who sacrifice for His cause. The moment Abraham made this noble migration, cutting all ties with disbelief, Allah compensated him with something far greater than what he had left behind. Allah granted him righteous offspring: Isaac (Isḥāq), and then Isaac's son Jacob (Yaʿqūb). These were not ordinary children — they were chosen prophets of Allah, carrying the torch of monotheism after their father. Through them, the lineage of prophethood continued for generations, and from Jacob's descendants came many more prophets, including Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

Notice the beautiful sequence: Abraham gave up his biological father (Āzar) who was a disbeliever, and Allah gave him sons and grandsons who were prophets. He left a family of idolaters, and Allah replaced them with a family of righteous messengers. This is Allah's way — when you sincerely leave something for His sake, He gives you something far better in return.

The verse also highlights that prophethood is a divine gift, not something earned by lineage alone. Allah says, "And each one We made a prophet" — meaning Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were all chosen by Allah's wisdom and mercy. This was a great honor and a source of comfort for Abraham after his difficult separation.

A Daʿwah Reflection for the Reader:

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: true success lies in prioritizing Allah's pleasure over worldly attachments, even if it means leaving behind family, home, or comfort. Abraham's story teaches us that when we make sacrifices for Allah, He never leaves us empty-handed. He replaces what we lose with something better — if not in this world, then certainly in the Hereafter.

Today, many Muslims face similar tests: standing firm on their faith in the face of family pressure, leaving environments of sin, or migrating to preserve their religion. Take heart from Abraham's example. Allah sees your struggle, and His compensation is always greater than your sacrifice. Trust Him, and He will grant you honor, peace, and blessings beyond your imagination — just as He did for His beloved friend, Abraham.

And remember: the greatest gift Allah can give anyone is not wealth or status, but guidance and righteous offspring who carry the message of truth. Pray to Allah to make you and your children among those who uphold His religion, just as Abraham prayed for his descendants.
