Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- Ghulam (غُلَامٍ): A boy or a young male child.
- Samiyyan (سَمِيًّا): A namesake — one who shares the same name.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Zakariya (peace be upon him) called upon his Lord in secret, with a heart full of humility and hope, Allah responded to his supplication in the most beautiful way. The verse begins with a direct, honouring call: *"O Zakariya!"* — it is as if the Almighty is addressing him personally, reassuring him that his prayer has been heard and accepted.
Allah then gives him the glad tidings of a son, whose name would be Yahya (John) — a name never given to anyone before him. This was not just any child; it was a miracle, for Zakariya was old and his wife was barren. Yet, the One who creates from nothing simply says "Be," and it is.
The name *Yahya* itself carries a profound meaning — it signifies life, and it is said that his mother's womb, which had been lifeless and hopeless, was revived with his existence. Moreover, Allah honoured this child by making him unique in name, so that he would be recognised as a sign of divine power and a mercy to his parents.
This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: never despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how impossible the situation may seem. When you call upon Allah with sincerity, He answers in ways that exceed your expectations. He gives you what you need, and sometimes He grants you a distinction that no one else has — just as He honoured Yahya with a unique name and a noble character.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how Allah responds to His righteous servants. Zakariya did not have wealth or power to secure a child — he had only his du'a, his tears, and his trust in Allah. And that was enough. So turn to Allah with your own needs, no matter how big or small. He is the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is. If He could give a child to an elderly man and a barren woman, then He can open doors for you that seem locked forever. Let this verse fill your heart with hope, and let your tongue be moist with du'a, for Allah loves those who ask Him.
