Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of negation and rebuke, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It decisively rejects the false notion mentioned before.
  • Sayakfurūna (سَيَكْفُرُونَ): They will deny or disbelieve — here, it means the false deities will reject and disown the worship offered to them.
  • Biʿibādatihim (بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ): Their worship — i.e., the acts of devotion, prayer, and reverence that the polytheists directed toward these false gods.
  • Ḍiddan (ضِدًّا): An adversary, opponent, or enemy — someone who stands against you in hostility.

The Interpretation:

This verse is a powerful and decisive response to the false hopes of the polytheists. They had claimed that their idols and false deities would intercede for them and bring them honor and glory before Allah. Some even said, "These idols are our intercessors with Allah," or "They will make us mighty and honored."

Allah responds with a firm and emphatic rejection: "No indeed!" — meaning, what you imagine is completely wrong and will never happen. The truth is the exact opposite of your expectations.

On the Day of Judgment, these very idols and false gods — whether they were statues, angels, prophets, or righteous people who were wrongly worshipped — will deny and disown the worship that was directed toward them. They will declare their complete innocence of it, saying, as mentioned elsewhere in the Quran: "They will say, 'Glory be to You! It was not for us to take any protector besides You...'" (25:18). They will openly disassociate themselves from those who worshipped them.

Not only will they reject this worship, but they will also become fierce adversaries and enemies of their former worshippers. Instead of being a source of honor and support, they will testify against them, argue against them, and be the very cause of their humiliation and punishment. The idols that people hoped would lift them up will instead push them down into the depths of the Fire.

This is a profound lesson for humanity: anything or anyone worshipped besides Allah — whether it is wealth, power, fame, a person, or a stone — will ultimately betray its worshipper. Only Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all, is worthy of worship, and only He can bring true honor, salvation, and eternal success.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. How many people today place their hopes in created things — in money, in status, in celebrities, in worldly powers — hoping these will bring them honor and security? Yet, on the Day when nothing avails except a pure heart, all these false hopes will vanish like a mirage. They will become enemies to those who trusted them.

The only true honor lies in submitting to Allah alone, worshipping Him sincerely, and following His Messenger ﷺ. Whoever does so will find, on that Day, that Allah is his Protector, his Helper, and his ultimate Honor. Let us turn to Allah now, before that Day comes when every soul will see the reality of its deeds — and let us make Him alone the object of our worship and our hope.
