Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the misguided logic of the polytheists, particularly the disbelievers of Quraysh. They took for themselves false gods—idols and statues—worshipping them alongside or instead of Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. Their sole intention behind this was to gain honor, strength, and support from these fabricated deities. They believed that these idols would intercede for them, protect them in times of hardship, and grant them prestige among their people.
However, the verse subtly and powerfully dismantles this illusion. These "gods" were nothing more than lifeless objects—carved stone, wood, or metal—that could neither hear, nor see, nor help anyone. They could not bring benefit nor ward off harm. The polytheists thought they were elevating themselves by clinging to these false deities, but in reality, they were degrading their own intellect and souls. True honor and strength come only from Allah, the Almighty, who is the sole Provider of victory and protection.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: how often do we, too, seek honor and support from things other than Allah? It might not be idols of stone, but it could be wealth, status, people, or worldly systems that we rely upon more than our Creator. Allah reminds us in this verse that any source of strength we adopt besides Him is ultimately hollow and fleeting. The only lasting honor is found in submission to Allah, in trusting Him, and in seeking His pleasure. When you place your reliance on Allah, He elevates you in ways no idol or worldly power ever could. Let this verse be a gentle call to purify your heart—direct your hope, your fear, and your trust solely to Allah, and you will find a glory that never fades.
