Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Alfayna" (أَلْفَيْنَا): We found or discovered.
  • "La ya'qiloona shay'an" (لَا يَعْقِلُونَ شَيْئًا): They do not comprehend or understand anything (of truth or guidance).
  • "Wa la yahtadoon" (وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ): And they are not guided (to the right path).

Explanation of the Verse:

When the believers sincerely advise those who have gone astray, saying, "Follow what Allah has revealed — the Quran and the guidance it brings," the disbelievers stubbornly refuse and reply, "No, we will instead follow the ways and beliefs we found our forefathers practicing."

Allah then poses a powerful, rhetorical question to awaken their intellect: "Do they follow their forefathers even if those forefathers understood nothing of the truth, possessed no sound reasoning, and were themselves lost in darkness, unable to find the straight path?"

This verse highlights a tragic reality: blind imitation of ancestors without any evidence or reflection. The disbelievers clung to inherited traditions even when those traditions were built on ignorance and misguidance. They chose the comfort of conformity over the light of revelation, and in doing so, they rejected the very mercy and guidance that Allah sent down for their salvation.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul. Allah invites you to use the greatest gift He gave you — your intellect and heart. He does not ask you to abandon your heritage, but He urges you to weigh every belief and practice against the scale of divine revelation. Truth is not determined by how old a tradition is, nor by how many people follow it; truth is what Allah has revealed in His Book and through His final Messenger (peace be upon him).

How beautiful it is when a person breaks free from the chains of blind imitation and seeks the light of guidance! How noble it is to say, "I heard and I obey," when the call of Allah reaches your ears! The Quran is not a burden — it is a mercy, a healing for the hearts, and a roadmap to eternal success.

So, do not be like those who turned away from the truth simply because it was unfamiliar. Instead, be among those who reflect, who seek, and who find — for Allah promises that whoever holds firmly to His guidance will never be lost, in this life or the next. Open your heart to His words today, and you will taste a peace that no inherited tradition can ever provide.

📜 Verse 168-172 — Al-Baqarah

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know.
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
