Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • يَنْعِقُ (yan'iqu): The act of a shepherd calling out or shouting to his flock of sheep or goats. It refers to a loud cry or shout that is not a meaningful conversation.
  • دُعَاءً وَنِدَاءً (du'a'an wa nida'an): A call and a shout — merely sounds that reach the ears without conveying understanding or meaning.
  • صُمٌّ (summun): Deaf — unable to hear the truth in a way that benefits them.
  • بُكْمٌ (bukmun): Mute — unable to speak or utter the truth.
  • عُمْيٌ (umyun): Blind — unable to see the clear signs and proofs of guidance.
  • لَا يَعْقِلُونَ (la ya'qilun): They do not use their intellect or reason to comprehend and benefit from what they hear and see.

The Interpretation:

Allah, the Most Merciful, presents a powerful and vivid parable to illustrate the state of those who reject faith. The example of the disbelievers and the one who calls them to guidance — the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — is like a shepherd who shouts and cries out to his flock of animals. The animals hear the sound of his voice, but they do not understand a single word of what he says. They only perceive the noise — the call and the shout — without grasping any meaning or guidance from it.

This is exactly the situation of the disbelievers when they are invited to the path of truth and righteousness. They hear the words of the Qur'an and the call to Islam, but their hearts and minds are sealed, so they do not benefit from what they hear. They are described as:

  • Deaf (summun): They have blocked their ears to the truth, so even though sound reaches them, they do not truly listen with the intent to understand and accept.
  • Mute (bukmun): Their tongues are silenced from uttering the truth and bearing witness to it, even when it becomes clear to them.
  • Blind (umyun): Their eyes do not perceive the brilliant signs and proofs of Allah's existence and oneness that are scattered throughout the universe and within themselves.

Because of this, they do not use their intellect — the very faculty Allah gave them to distinguish right from wrong — to reflect upon the message and embrace it.

A Call to Reflection and Mercy:

Dear reader, this parable is not merely a description of the disbelievers of the past; it is a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It reminds us of the immense value of the intellect and the senses that Allah has blessed us with. How tragic it is when a person possesses ears, eyes, and a mind, yet fails to use them to seek the truth and draw closer to their Creator!

The Qur'an is a living miracle, a book that calls to the best of values and the most perfect way of life. It is a mercy from Allah, sent to guide humanity out of darkness and into light. When you hear its verses, let your heart soften, let your mind ponder, and let your soul respond. Do not be like those who hear but do not listen, who see but do not observe, and who think but do not reflect.

Allah, in His infinite mercy, has left no excuse for anyone. He has sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and placed signs in the universe and within ourselves. The door of guidance is open to all who sincerely seek it. So, open your heart to the truth, and you will find peace, purpose, and success in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 169-173 — Al-Baqarah

He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know.
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
