Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 181

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a serious matter of justice and trust: the will (wasiyyah) of a deceased person. Allah says that whoever changes or distorts a will after having heard it—whether by adding, removing, or preventing what was ordained—then the sin of that alteration falls solely upon those who make the change. The deceased is completely absolved, for they fulfilled their duty by stating their wishes. The one who alters the will bears the full weight of the transgression, and the original intent of the deceased remains protected in the sight of Allah.

The verse then delivers a powerful reminder: "Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." He hears every word of the will as it was spoken, and He knows every hidden motive behind any alteration—whether it stems from a desire for justice or from corruption and self-interest. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will hold every soul accountable for their actions.

This teaching instills a profound sense of responsibility in the believer. It calls us to be guardians of trust, to honor the wishes of those who have passed, and to never let personal gain or bias lead us to distort what was rightfully ordained. The verse also reassures the dying believer that their final words are not lost—Allah hears them and will safeguard their rights, even if others try to change them.
