Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fāriḍ (فارض): An old, aged cow that has passed its prime and no longer gives birth.
- Bikr (بكر): A young, virgin cow that has not yet calved.
- ʿAwān (عوان): A middle-aged cow, between the two extremes, one that has calved once or twice.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Children of Israel were commanded to slaughter a cow, they did not simply obey. Instead, they began to ask unnecessary questions, seeking to delay and complicate the command. They said to Prophet Musa (peace be upon him): "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what this cow is—what are its qualities?"
Musa replied, relaying the divine answer: Allah says that the cow should be neither too old and worn out, nor too young and immature, but rather of a middle age, between the two states. It should be a cow that has reached its prime, having calved once or twice, strong and suitable for the purpose.
Then Musa urged them: "So do what you are commanded." This was a gentle but firm reminder to stop their excessive questioning and simply submit to Allah’s command with sincerity and haste.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. How often do we, too, delay or complicate Allah’s commands with unnecessary questions and excuses? The Children of Israel were given a clear order, yet they responded with hesitation and excessive inquiry, which only made their task harder.
Islam is a religion of ease and submission. When Allah and His Messenger command something, the best response is swift obedience with a content heart. The Quran repeatedly praises those who say: "We hear and we obey."
Let this story inspire you to embrace a beautiful quality: the joy of immediate obedience. When you hear a command from Allah, do not overthink or delay. Trust that His wisdom is perfect and His commands are always for your benefit, even if you do not fully understand the reason behind them.
The cow in this story was not the goal—the goal was to test the obedience and sincerity of the people. Likewise, in your life, every command of Allah is a test of your faith and devotion. So, be among those who race toward goodness, who answer the call of their Lord with eagerness and love.
Remember, the more you submit, the more peace and blessings flow into your life. And the more you question and delay, the harder your path becomes. Choose the path of the believers: hear, obey, and prosper.
