Word Meanings:

  • سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا الْحُسْنَىٰ – The good word (of Paradise) that has preceded for them from Allah, meaning His prior decree and knowledge that they are among the people of happiness and salvation.
  • مُبْعَدُونَ – Removed and kept far away (from the Fire), such that they neither enter it nor even come near it.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the polytheists of Mecca heard that those who were worshipped besides Allah—such as Jesus (ʿĪsā), the angels, and other righteous servants—would be in Hellfire along with their worshippers, they used this as a pretext to justify their idolatry, saying: "These beings we worship will be in the Fire with us, so we are all equal." In response to this false claim, Allah reveals this verse to clarify the truth and remove all doubt.

Allah states that those for whom the decree of goodness has already been recorded—those whom His eternal knowledge has marked as people of happiness, righteousness, and faith, such as Jesus, the angels, and all the sincere prophets and believers—these are the ones who will be kept far away from the Fire. They will not enter it at all, nor will they even approach it. Their distance from the Fire is absolute and complete, because their Lord has honoured them with His mercy and grace, and their deeds were pure and devoted to Him alone.

This verse is a profound reassurance for every believer: if you are sincere in your faith and your actions, then Allah's prior knowledge and decree encompass you with goodness. Your destiny is not left to chance—it is sealed by the mercy of the One who knows what your heart truly holds. So do not let the claims of the misguided confuse you, and do not think that the righteous and the wicked will be treated equally. Allah distinguishes between them with perfect justice and grace.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful and hope-filled message: Allah has already written goodness for His sincere servants. But this decree is not disconnected from your choices—it is realised through your faith, your repentance, and your striving to please Him. So, turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, purify your worship for Him alone, and follow the path of His beloved messengers. Then you will be among those who are kept far from the Fire—not because of your own merit alone, but because of Allah's immense mercy that embraces those who seek Him. And what a joy it is to know that the One who created you has already prepared for you a place of safety and honour, far away from every harm. Let this certainty fill your heart with peace, and let it drive you to live a life that reflects the light of this divine promise.
