Key Words and Phrases:

  • كَبِيرُهُمْ (kabīruhum): Their chief, the largest or most prominent one among them.
  • فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ (fa'salūhum): So ask them (the idols).
  • يَنطِقُونَ (yanṭiqūn): They speak, utter words, or articulate a response.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) had just shattered the smaller idols in the temple, leaving the largest one intact, with an axe hung around its neck. When his people returned and asked him in astonishment, "Did you do this to our gods?" he replied with a subtle, powerful argument that exposed their folly: *"Rather, this chief of theirs did it—so ask them, if they can speak."*

In this response, Ibrahim was not lying; rather, he was employing a rhetorical strategy of gentle sarcasm and logical reasoning to make his people confront the absurdity of their worship. By attributing the act to the largest idol, he was challenging them: if these idols are truly divine, then let the big one defend itself or explain what happened. But since they are lifeless stones that cannot utter a single word, how can they be worthy of worship, protection, or devotion?

This statement was a brilliant demonstration of the futility of idolatry. Ibrahim's underlying message was: "You claim these idols are gods, yet they cannot speak, act, or even protect themselves. The one who truly acts, creates, and sustains is Allah alone—the Living, the All-Powerful." By pointing to the idols' inability to speak, he proved their helplessness and, by extension, the foolishness of worshipping them. In his heart, Ibrahim knew full well that he himself had broken them, but his words were a mirror held up to his people, forcing them to see the emptiness of their beliefs.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every human being. It invites us to pause and reflect: What do we place our trust in? What do we rely upon in times of need? Are we clinging to things that cannot hear, see, or speak—whether they are statues, wealth, status, or fleeting desires? True power belongs only to Allah, who hears every prayer, answers every call, and controls the destiny of all creation.

Ibrahim's courage and wisdom teach us that faith is not blind following, but a conscious, rational journey toward the truth. He stood alone against a whole society, armed with certainty and eloquence, to demolish falsehood—not with violence alone, but with the light of reasoning and the power of truth. Let us, too, purify our hearts from every false object of reliance and turn wholeheartedly to Allah, the Only One who truly speaks, acts, and responds. In doing so, we follow the footsteps of the beloved Prophet Ibrahim, the friend of Allah, and we find peace, purpose, and victory in this life and the next.
