Word Meanings:

  • "A-ant" (أأنت): "Is it you" — an interrogative expressing astonishment and rebuke.
  • "Fa'alta" (فعلت): "You did" — referring to the destructive act.
  • "Haadha" (هذا): "This" — pointing to the shattered idols.
  • "Bi-aalihatina" (بآلهتنا): "To our gods" — meaning their idols that they worshipped besides Allah.
  • "Ya Ibrahim" (يا إبراهيم): "O Ibrahim" — a direct address, showing both familiarity and confrontation.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) smashed the idols — except the largest one, leaving it intact so he could later point to it as evidence — the people returned to their temple and were shocked to see their gods broken into pieces. They immediately remembered Ibrahim's earlier words against their worship, so they summoned him and confronted him with a question filled with anger and disbelief: "Is it you who did this to our gods, O Ibrahim?"

Their question was not a genuine inquiry seeking the truth; rather, it was an accusatory interrogation. They already knew in their hearts that Ibrahim was the one who had done it, because he had openly criticized their idol-worship before. Yet they asked in this manner to corner him, hoping he would confess so they could punish him. The tone of the question reflects their astonishment that anyone would dare to desecrate what they held sacred, and their arrogance in defending falsehood.

This scene teaches us a profound lesson: the people of falsehood, no matter how powerful they seem, are always shaken when the truth is boldly proclaimed and falsehood is challenged. Ibrahim's courage was not reckless — it was rooted in his unwavering faith in Allah and his certainty that Allah would protect him. He did not fear their threats because his trust was in the Creator, not in the creation.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, look at how Ibrahim stood alone against a whole nation of idolaters. He did not wait for others to join him; he took action with sincerity and wisdom. This is the spirit of true faith — to stand for the truth even if you are alone, and to rely on Allah alone. When you see evil and falsehood around you, remember Ibrahim's example: speak the truth with wisdom, act with courage, and place your trust in Allah. He will never abandon those who strive for His cause. And just as Allah saved Ibrahim from the fire later, He will always support His sincere servants in ways they cannot imagine. Let this verse inspire you to be a defender of truth in your own life, no matter the cost.

63قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَٰذَا فَاسْأَلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا يَنطِقُونَ
He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."
64فَرَجَعُوا إِلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ
So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."
