Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Uffin (أُفٍّ): An expression of disgust, contempt, and severe disapproval. It conveys the idea of "shame on you" or "how foul is this."
  • Ma ta'budoon (مَا تَعْبُدُونَ): That which you worship — referring to the idols and false deities they revered.
  • Min doonillah (مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ): Besides or apart from Allah, meaning in exclusion of the true God.
  • Afala ta'qiloon (أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ): "Will you not use your reason?" — a rhetorical question rebuking their lack of intellect and sound judgment.

The Interpretation:

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), having already presented his logical and powerful arguments against idol worship, now delivers a final, crushing rebuke to his people. He expresses utter disgust and contempt for them and for the lifeless idols they cling to instead of Allah. His words are a profound rejection of their entire belief system: "Shame upon you and upon whatever you worship besides Allah!"

The idols they worshipped were nothing but stone, wood, or metal — incapable of hearing, seeing, helping, or harming. They could not create, provide, or even protect themselves from dust and decay. Yet, the people devoted their prayers, hopes, and fears to these powerless objects, turning away from the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Ibrahim's question, "Will you not use your reason?" is a powerful call to intellectual awakening. It challenges them to reflect: How can a rational mind bow down to a statue that cannot move, speak, or defend itself? How can a thinking person abandon the worship of the All-Powerful, All-Knowing Lord for a piece of carved rock? The very nature of their actions contradicted logic and common sense.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation: The human intellect, when used sincerely and without arrogance, naturally leads to the recognition of the One True God. It is only when desires, blind following, or pride cloud the mind that people fall into such absurdities. Ibrahim's words invite us to purify our worship, direct it solely to Allah, and never allow our reason to be hijacked by false traditions or empty rituals.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, Allah has blessed you with a mind — a magnificent gift that distinguishes you from all other creatures. He did not give you this intellect to waste it on superstition or blind imitation. He gave it to you so that you may look at the universe, see His signs, and recognize His greatness. When you worship Allah alone, you are not following a blind tradition — you are following the most logical, most natural path a human being can take. Your heart finds peace, your mind finds clarity, and your soul finds its true purpose. So use your reason, as Ibrahim urged his people, and let it guide you to the light of faith.
