Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mala' (الملأ): The chiefs, nobles, and influential leaders of a community.
- Yatafaddala (يتفضل): To seek superiority, elevation, or leadership over others.
- Aba'ina al-Awwalin (آبائنا الأولين): Our forefathers of earlier generations.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him, called his people to worship Allah alone, the arrogant and disbelieving leaders of his people rose to confront him. They addressed their followers and the common people, trying to undermine his message with deceptive arguments. They said: "This man is nothing but a human being like yourselves — he has no special quality or divine nature that sets him apart. He only seeks to elevate himself above you, to become your leader and master, so that you follow him while he enjoys status and authority."
Then they added a second argument: "If Allah truly wanted to send a messenger to guide us, He would have sent angels from heaven — not a mere human being like us." This was a pretext they used to reject the truth, even though they themselves acknowledged the existence of angels. They further claimed: "We have never heard of such a thing — that a human being claims to be a messenger of Allah — among our forefathers of earlier generations." They used this as a false justification, as if novelty itself were a proof of falsehood.
Their words reveal the arrogance of those who are accustomed to power and privilege. They could not accept that a man from among them, who was not from the elite class, would be chosen by Allah to deliver the divine message. They confused the messenger's humanity with weakness, not realizing that Allah has always sent messengers from among humans — for humans are the ones who can relate to other humans, and angels are not sent as messengers to dwell among people in this worldly life.
The deeper irony here is that these leaders were not truly concerned with whether the message came from an angel or a human. Their real objection was to the message itself — the call to abandon their idols and submit to Allah alone. They used these arguments as a shield to protect their social status and their inherited traditions, even though those traditions had no basis in truth.
A Call to Reflection:
This scene from the story of Nuh, peace be upon him, carries timeless lessons for every generation. How often do we reject the truth simply because it comes from someone we consider "ordinary" or because it challenges our inherited ways? The disbelieving leaders of Nuh's people were not stupid — they were clever, articulate, and persuasive. Yet their cleverness was used to block the path of guidance, not to seek it.
The Qur'an presents their arguments to us so that we may recognize similar patterns in our own lives. When the truth is presented to us, do we evaluate it on its merits, or do we look at the status of the one who brings it? Do we cling to "what our forefathers believed" even when evidence contradicts it? Or do we open our hearts to the truth wherever it may come from?
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, chose to send messengers from among humans precisely because they can understand our struggles, our weaknesses, and our daily realities. This is not a deficiency — it is a mercy. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was also a human being, yet he was the best of creation. Humanity is not a flaw; it is the very vessel through which Allah's guidance flows to us.
Let us learn from the mistakes of those who came before us. Let us not be among those who reject the truth because of pride, social pressure, or blind adherence to tradition. Instead, let us be among those who say: "We hear and we obey" — who accept the truth with humility and gratitude, regardless of the worldly status of the one who conveys it. For the ultimate success lies not in following the majority or the elite, but in following what Allah has revealed and what His messengers have taught.
