Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jinnah (جِنَّة): Madness or insanity; a state of being possessed or afflicted by jinn, causing one to lose sound judgment.
- Fatarabbasū (فَتَرَبَّصُوا): Wait, be patient, or bide your time with expectation.
- Ḥattā ḥīn (حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ): Until a certain time or period; until an appointed moment.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelieving leaders of Prophet Nūḥ’s (Noah, peace be upon him) people, in their arrogance and stubbornness, tried to convince the common folk that Nūḥ was nothing more than an ordinary man like themselves—no better, no different. They claimed that his call to monotheism was not a divine message but the ramblings of a man afflicted with madness. They said: "He is merely a man possessed by jinn; his words are incoherent and unreliable. So wait patiently for his condition to change—either he will recover from his madness and abandon his mission, or he will die, and you will be rid of him and his troublesome call."
This was their feeble attempt to undermine his credibility and discourage people from listening to him. They offered no rational argument, no proof, and no alternative truth—only mockery, false accusations, and a call to idle waiting. Yet, history shows that their plan failed utterly, for Allāh protected His prophet and ultimately destroyed the disbelievers in the flood, while Nūḥ and the believers were saved.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of truth and falsehood. When people lack evidence, they resort to insults and baseless accusations. The prophets of Allāh were often called madmen, poets, or sorcerers—not because they were any of these, but because their message challenged the comfortable ignorance of their societies.
Dear reader, do not be like those who wait for the truth to disappear. Instead, open your heart to the message of the Qur’ān, which is the eternal miracle of Allāh—a book that challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it, and yet no one has ever been able to do so. The truth does not need your patience to vanish; it needs your sincerity to embrace it. Allāh’s guidance is the greatest treasure you can ever find, and it is available to you right now, in this very moment. Do not let pride or habit keep you from it, for the success of this life and the next lies in submitting to your Creator.
