Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Hamazat" (هَمَزَاتِ): This refers to the whisperings, insinuations, and evil promptings that the devils cast into the hearts of people. It comes from the root meaning "to push" or "to prick," indicating the sudden, piercing suggestions that provoke one toward evil.
  • "Ash-Shayateen" (الشَّيَاطِينِ): The devils among the jinn (and also the evil ones among mankind) who strive to misguide and corrupt humanity.
  • "A'udhu bika" (أَعُوذُ بِكَ): I seek refuge and protection with You, clinging to Your care and relying on Your defense.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, every believer — to turn to Allah with a heartfelt supplication: "My Lord, I seek refuge with You from the whisperings of the devils."

The meaning is: I seek Your protection, O Lord, from the evil insinuations and deceptive suggestions that the devils cast into the hearts, stirring desires toward falsehood, corruption, and turning away from the truth. They try to distract the believer from worship, plant doubts in the mind, and provoke anger, envy, or despair. The verse also includes seeking refuge from their presence in any of one's affairs — whether in prayer, in daily decisions, or in moments of weakness — for their mere presence brings harm and confusion.

This is a profound lesson in humility and reliance upon Allah alone. The believer acknowledges that protection from evil is not achieved through one's own strength or intelligence, but through the grace and guardianship of the Almighty. It is an admission of human weakness and a declaration of trust in the All-Powerful.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear believer, reflect on the beauty of this supplication. The devils are relentless in their pursuit — they whisper at every moment of heedlessness, they embellish sins, and they discourage good deeds. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you a weapon: the words of refuge. Whenever you feel a bad thought creeping into your heart, whenever you sense doubt or despair, whenever you are about to fall into sin — say: "Rabbi a'udhu bika min hamazatish-shayateen" (My Lord, I seek refuge with You from the whisperings of the devils).

This is not merely a phrase to be uttered; it is a lifeline that connects you to the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One who has power over all things. He who protects you from the devils has indeed granted you the greatest security. Let this supplication be your constant companion, for it brings peace to the heart, clarity to the mind, and strength to the soul. And know that when you seek refuge in Allah, He answers — for He is the Best Protector, the Most Merciful.
