Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Idfa'" (ادْفَعْ) – Repel, push back, or counter.
  • "Bil-latī hiya aḥsan" (بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ) – With that which is best; i.e., the finest quality or most virtuous conduct.
  • "As-sayyi'ah" (السَّيِّئَةَ) – The evil, harm, or wrongdoing directed at you.
  • "Naḥnu a'lamu bimā yaṣifūn" (نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ) – We (Allah) know best what they attribute or describe (i.e., their false claims and accusations).

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger of Allah, and every believer who follows this divine guidance, when your enemies or those who oppose the truth harm you—whether through harsh words, mockery, or wrongful actions—do not respond in kind. Do not let their evil drag you down to their level. Instead, repel that evil with what is best: respond with forgiveness, patience, and excellence in character. Meet their insults with kindness, their aggression with gentleness, and their ignorance with wisdom. This is the way of the noble soul—to overcome hatred with love, and to extinguish the fire of enmity with the water of compassion.

This command is not merely a suggestion; it is a profound spiritual strategy. When you counter evil with good, you disarm your opponent, soften hardened hearts, and open doors for reconciliation. Many a bitter enemy has become a sincere friend through such noble conduct. Allah knows the true state of affairs, and He is fully aware of what these polytheists and deniers attribute to you—their false accusations of sorcery, madness, and their stubborn persistence in shirk (associating partners with Allah). They may say what they say, but their words do not change the truth, nor do they harm you in the least. Allah will deal with them justly, and their schemes will only rebound upon themselves.

So, dear believer, let this verse be your guide in every difficult interaction. When someone wrongs you, choose the higher path. Forgive, overlook, and respond with goodness—not because you are weak, but because you are strong in faith. This is the character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who, despite facing the worst persecution, never retaliated with evil. He responded with patience, supplication, and an unshakable trust in Allah. And Allah, who knows all things, will never let such goodness go to waste. He is the Best of Judges, and His promise of reward for the patient and the virtuous is certain.

This beautiful teaching is a gift from Allah to His servants—a way to purify the soul, elevate one's rank, and draw closer to Him. Embrace it, practice it, and you will find peace in your heart and victory in your life, even amidst the harshest trials.
